Seamus Harahan wins Paul Hamlyn Foundation Award

Congratulations to Seamus Harahan who, on Monday evening, was announced as one of this year's recipients of the UK's prestigious Paul Hamlyn Foundation Awards.

The awards, which consist of £45,000 spread in equal installments over three years, exist to "give artists the freedom to develop their creative ideas and to contribute to their personal and professional growth". Previous prize winners have included Michael Landy, Gustav Metzger, Jeremy Deller and Turner Prize winners Tomma Abts and Mark Leckey.

The gallery is closed this week and next week for the installation of 'beautiful unglittering things', our second solo exhibition by Barcelona-based artist Jaime Pitarch.

Pitarch's work has included sculpture, drawing, video and performance. Often using humble everyday objects such as a guitar, a chair, and household and consumer products, the artist employs inventive and witty strategies of displacement, recontextualization, and visual punning to peel away at their routine uses and meanings, posing what The Village Voice (writing about his 2006 solo show at the gallery) has called a series of "exquisite conundrums".

Chili Moon Town 'Rally For Dreams' Updates!

The Chili Moon Town "Rally for Dreams" has changed shape!

Artists Anna Galtarossa & Daniel González will now be hosting their "Rally For Dreams" atop a sequined double-decker bus, touring various Manhattan locations.

Date: Fri, Oct 16, 12pm-2pm

Over the course of a Friday lunch hour, a glittering double-decker bus with multiple brass bands playing on its upper level will drive around the city promoting the power of dreams and the unique talent New Yorkers have to make them come true.

Led by the Hungry March Band and a distinguished soprano, the musicians will play, wearing artist-designed pajamas and animal costumes while riding across the island, driving by Times Square, the Empire State Building, Union Square, Canal Street and Bowery (see map below).

Come and meet us along the way!

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Artists Anna Galtarossa & Daniel González started collaborating in 2007 on an ambitious public art project: Chili Moon Town Tour. Debuting in Mexico City on Chapultepec Lake, this floating, utopian city was born with the dream of undertaking a journey to New York City. Millions have made this passage throughout history, inspired by the freedom and possibility that Manhattan and its citizens give to the world.

CITY of DREAMS is curated by Blanca de la Torre with the support of the Italian Cultural Institute of New York and the Mexican Cultural Institute of New York

Jane South in 'Slash: Paper Under The Knife'

Jane South unveils a major new installation as part of the 'Slash: Paper Under The Knife' exhibition, now on view at New York's Museum of Arts and Design.

The exhibition explores the international phenomenon of cut paper in contemporary art, showcasing the work of artists (including Thomas Demand, Olafur Eliasson, Tom Friedman, Judy Pfaff, and Kara Walker) who reach beyond the traditional role of paper as a neutral surface to consider its potential as a medium for provocative, expressive, and visually striking sculpture, installation, and video animation.

The exhibition opened to the public on October 9th, and Jane, as part of a special opening week preview along with a number of other artists, has been working in situ on her installation in the museum's 4th and 5th floor galleries.

You can catch Jane putting the finishing touches to her piece through the end of the day today, October 13th, and the exhibition continues through April 4th, 2010.

Chili Moon Town Tour 'Rally For Dreams'

Chili Moon Town (Anna Galtarossa and Daniel González) are tonight hosting the press launch for their upcoming 'Rally For Dreams'. The reception and press preview, 6:30 – 8:00pm at the Italian Cultural Institute, 686 Park Avenue, will lay out all the details on the rally taking place at New York City Hall on October 16th.

Anna and Daniel are calling on all lovers of art and lovers of New York City to gather at City Hall on the 16th and let their voices be heard in support of the artist's quest to bring their wonderous Chili Moon Town floating city to the lake in Central Park. Chili Moon Town debuted to spectacular effect at Chapultepec Park in Mexico City in 2007 and now it's New Yorker's turn!

Zilvinas Kempinas - more press

Zilvinas Kempinas continues to garner critical praise for his installation 'Tube' in Venice. The latest comes in Art In America magazine's Venice review in their September issue, see above.

Also worth noting, Palais de Tokyo director Marc-Olivier Wahler's nod to Zilvinas's Basel Volta installation in Art Newspaper, which you can read here.

Zilvinas Kempinas: Venice updates

Some press updates on Zilvinas Kempinas, who, as reported here, is representing Lithuania at the Venice Biennale this summer with his show-stopping installation 'Tube'.

Zilvinas has been garnering many favorable press reviews, including numerous Biennale critic's picks:

First off, read Laura McLean Ferris' excellent 2-page article in June's Art Review magazine here; and also an extended interview by Selina Ting with the artist in the inaugural issue of the online initiArt Magazine here.

French art magazine Beaux Arts got in early with their June recommendation of Zilvinas' pavilion; and again singled out Lithuania as one of the best of the national pavilions in their summer issue.

Le Figaro, in an article that awarded special 'Palmes' to individual works and pavilions in the Biennale, gave Zilvinas the 'Space-Time Palme', lauding its glorious spatio-temporal warping of the architecture of the Scuola Grande della Misericordia.

Artnet.dk describe 'Tube' as "wunderschöner" in Sabine B. Vogel's Venice roundup; while Aussie monthly Art World also singles out Zilvinas' "mind-boggling" work as one of the Biennale's best.

There is a great video walk-through available on vernissage.tv, and that is pretty-much it - for now. 'Tube' continues at the Scuola Grande della Misericordia in Canareggio, Venice through November 22nd. Szabolcs Veres images now online

We have just added an image gallery and bio to our website on Szabolcs Veres, the young Romanian painter whose work proved to be a huge success at our booth in Volta (see images below, from 'Goya in Transylvania', an article on the artist on Romanian news site cotidianul.ro).

Ian Burns exhibiting new work at IMMA, Dublin

As his three month residency on the Artist's Work Programme at Dublin's Irish Museum of Modern Art draws to a close, Ian Burns will be exhibiting two new pieces in the museum's Process Room through August 16th.

'A Separate State' is a new kinetic work that draws its power from a solar panel integrated into the sculpture. Mostly assembled from scavenged objects found near the museum, the piece references the visual cues of statehood - balance and justice - and plays with the great traditions of those absurd functional sculptures of the past: fountains.

'A Promise Of More' employs the atmospheric color of the unique Irish “Fireglow” light bulb to project the word “YOU” on the gallery wall, constructing the characters from the individual bulb filaments, refracted via cheap magnifying glasses, into a humble welcome or a hasty accusation.

'The Moons Ride Over', Adapted for Facebook by Jeff Gabel

In conjunction with 'Are You Sure You Are You?', our upcoming exhibition of new web art, Spencer Brownstone Gallery is delighted to announce the launch of gallery artist Jeff Gabel's new Facebook project, 'The Moons Ride Over'.

Based upon 'Salware: Oder Die Magdalena Von Bozen', a largely forgotten 1935 novel by Carl Zuckmayer which details the goings-on among a group of artists and intellectuals summering at a castle retreat in the South Tyrol, Gabel has translated and transposed large sections of the novel to the seemingly incongruous context of a Facebook site. Each character in the novel has been given his or her own Facebook identity and the artist has turned their often intense after-dinner debates into a series of posts and comments on each of the characters' pages.

Already well under way with his adaptation, Gabel is now opening up the project to contributions from Facebook members. Anyone with a Facebook account can view the novel-in-progress by searching Facebook for its main character Thomas Stolperer, or any of the characters from the list below. In addition, anyone can interact with the novel by requesting friendship with any of these characters.

Jeff Gabel is an artist based in Brooklyn who has had four solo shows at Spencer Brownstone Gallery, most recently in September 2008. Best known for his pencil drawings of characters appended with often dramatically extended narrative explications, Gabel has also produced a series of unconventional literary translations and adaptations, of which this Facebook project is the latest. These projects have included comic-book renderings of a Stefan Zweig story, an animated video adaptation of Thomas Mann's 'Gladius Dei', and a translation of an Alma Mahler biography into a foul-mouthed 'American vernacular'.

'Are You Sure You Are You?' - Opening Saturday April 11th

The gallery will be closed this week for the installation of 'Are You Sure You Are You?', a new group exhibition focusing on some of the most interesting contemporary artwork being produced with web and computer-based technology.

Where a first generation of tech-savvy artists in the late 90's often focused on grand multimedia presentations to show off the seemingly unlimited possibilities of this new frontier, the artists in 'Are You Sure You Are You?' represent a more recent trend toward a smaller scale, often self-effacing and humorous employment of their chosen medium. This work makes less of a 'statement' about the technology itself, and instead uses it as a platform for ever more inventive and thoughtful content.

Participating artists include: Cory Arcangel, Daniel Everett, Petra Cortright, Jeff Gabel, Guthrie Lonergan, Miltos Manetas, Angelo Plessas, Rafael Rozendaal, Andy Simionato, Tara Sinn, Mai Ueda, and Harm van den Dorpel.

Seamus Harahan is included in a new group show opening this week at London's Stephen Lawrence Gallery. 'Being British', curated by Alice Correia, features work by ten artists including Shezad Dawood, Tracey Emin, Chris Ofili, and Xi Jian Jun, and seeks to explore "how the ‘national’, in its multicultural forms, is being depicted and questioned in art today...".

The exhibition opens Thursday March 19, 6–8pm, and continues through April 17, with a special conference taking place Wednesday 15 April, 10am–5.30pm, more info here.
