Spencer Brownstone Gallery at Artforum Berlin

The gallery is participating at Artforum Berlin, which previews this Friday afternoon, September 28th, and runs through Wednesday October 3rd. We have a great range of work and a few surprises for this year's fair, including a series of new embroidered banners by Chili Moon Town Tour Productions (Anna Galtarossa and Daniel González) - see above; twelve new pencil-on-panel pieces by Jeff Gabel; Ian Burns' "Ice (Version 3): Ode to Lady Jane"; as well as work by Gavin Perry, Martin Wöhrl and Frohawk Two Feathers - artists we are excited to be working with over the coming year. Visit us at Booth 106, Hall 20 and, for more info on the Fair, go here.

Ian Burns at Spencer Brownstone Gallery

Ian Burns' second solo show at Spencer Brownstone Gallery opened September 12th. Titled 'The Manner Of Work', the exhibition summons the spirit of William Morris with a series of major new works that further Burns’ unique formulation of the hi-tech and the handcrafted. All of the works in the show develop, in varying ways, the artist’s signature ‘trompe l’oeil’ video process, but with a series of major new twists and innovations that see the artist admirably striking out for new territory. Read more on the show here; check out installation shots here; and see opening night pics here! Continues through October 20th.

Gallery Artist Updates

Gallery artists have been involved in a host of solo and group exhibitions internationally over the summer months and continuing through the end of the year.

Zilvinas Kempinas, as we reported before, celebrated a major one-person Museum show at the the CAC in Vilnius, Lithuania. The exhibition featured a new presentation of 'Flying Tape' as well as the debut of 'Parallels', a new installation of parallel lines of video tape, horizontally stretched just above head height across the entire length of one of the CAC's huge, football field-sized spaces. As promised, check this link for some stunning pictures of the two installations...

Zilvinas could also be seen in 'Ready Made' a group exhibition at Yvonne Lambert, New York during the summer. The show, which sought to present a variety of riffs on the Duchampian tradition of re-titling or re-purposing common objects, also featured work by, amongst others, Koo Jeong-A, Sarah Lucas, Cady Noland, and Rachel Whiteread.

And Zilvinas will also be showing this Fall in Istanbul as part of the 'Collected Visions' exhibition showcasing work from the JP Morgan Chase Art Collection. The work will be on view at the Pera Museum from October 26 through January 6, 2008. More info here.

Ian Burns has also been zig-zagging the globe, with contributions to the 'Animotion' show at Galleri 15, Norway (which continues through November 11th, check out info and an online version of the show's catalog here), as well as the 'New York - States Of Mind' show at Berlin's House of World Cultures. This latter represents a huge survey of art, events, and film screenings foregrounding New York artists whose work specifically "engages the public in debate", by focusing on a reading of the city as "an urban space in which various cultural, sexual, social and political perceptions meet". The exhibition continues through November 4th and is accompanied by a catalog. Read lots more here.

Jane South is currently showing in 'Material Pursuits', September 4 - December 14, at the Fleming Museum, University of Vermont. A large-scale exhibition "exploring how contemporary American artists are creating conceptually based artworks utilizing methods, materials, and strategies usually associated with craft", the show also includes work by Sheila Pepe, Lee Boroson, Lucky DeBellevue, James Esber, Jason Middlebrook, Jessica Rankin, and Anna Von Mertens, amongst others. Check here for details.

And Mathieu Mercier will be honored with a solo exhibition at Paris' Musée d'Art Moderne, that promises to gather together a number of works that span his career and have not been shown together before. Opening October 20th, the exhibition will run through January 6th, 2008. Test your French and read more about the show here and please stay tuned for further updates on this one.
