Zilvinas Kempinas Receives 2007 Calder Prize

Spencer Brownstone Gallery is delighted to announce that Zilvinas Kempinas is the recipient of the 2007 Calder Prize. The prize of $50,000 is awarded every two years to contemporary artists who have completed exemplary work early in their careers. He follows Tara Donovan, who won the prize in 2005.

Zilvinas was presented with the award at a ceremony on September 23rd at the French Embassy in New York by Bernard Kouchner, France’s foreign minister and 1999 Nobel Laureate.

The artist will now go on to take up residence at the Atelier Calder, in Saché, France, in January 2008. This prestigious program, which has been running for 19 years, allows an international artist the opportunity to live and work in Alexander Calder’s former home and studio in the French countryside for a six-month period. Past recipients include Mark Dion; Sarah Sze; Marina Abramovic; Tadashi Kawamata; Jimmie Durham; and Ernesto Neto.
